New Delhi, June 16: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday morning a held first all-party meeting after resuming the power at the centre. "We had a fruitful all-party meeting today, the first one after the election results and before the start of the Monsoon Session. Thankful to the leaders for their valuable suggestions. We all agreed on the smooth running of Parliament so that we can fulfil people's aspirations," PM Modi tweeted after the meeting. The meeting was attended by Minister of Parliamentary Affairs (MPA) Prahlad Joshi, Defence minister Rajnath Singh, Senior Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Adhir Ranjan Choudhary, Sudeep Bandopadhyay and Derek O' Brien of the Trinamool Congress, and National Conference (NC) patriarch Farooq Abdullah. To pass the key bills in Rajya Sabha, the government needs the support of all the party, where it still in minority. After the 2019 General Elections, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has a majority with 353 out of 545 Lok Sabha seats. However, in Rajya Sabha, it has 102 members of 245 members.

The minority in the upper house may affect the passing of important bills like "Triple Talaq". The bill had got stalled in Rajya Sabha in the last Lok Sabha. The bill was not only opposed by the opposition but also Bharatiya Janata Party ally Janata Dal-United (JDU).

Meanwhile, the opposition is yet to recover from its defeat in the general elections. The Indian National Congress (INC), which won 52 seats, is yet to announce its leader in both the houses. Efforts are on to have Congress President Rahul Gandhi in the role of leader of Lok Sabha.
