New Delhi, August 8: Former President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday received India's highest civilian award - Bharat Ratna - in New Delhi. Along with this, two others, legendary Assamese singer Bhupen Hazarika and social activist Nanaji Deshmukh were conferred Bharat Ratna posthumously. The awards were given by current President of India - Ram Nath Kovind.

Pranab Mukherjee became the only living legend from among the three great names who have been conferred with the country's highest civilian honour. While on behalf of Legendary Assamese singer Bhupen Hazarika his son Bhupen Hazarika, received the award. Also, Chairman of Deendayal Research Institute, Virendrajeet Singh, receives Bharat Ratna on behalf of social activist and senior RSS leader Nanaji Deshmukh. The RSS leader was conferred with Bharat Ratna posthumously for his social service.

The award was announced by the President Kovind in January, 2019, and on Thursday it was given to the great leaders. After receiving the award, Pranab Mukherjee thanked the special dignitaries - including Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and others.
