Bhopal, May 20: BJP Bhopal Lok Sabha candidate Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur on Monday said she will undertake a "maun vrat" or vow of silence over her comments that Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse was a patriot, which provoked criticism during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. “After the election procedures, it is now time for contemplation and thinking. If my words have hurt patriots in the country, then I apologise and I will strictly follow a vow of silence in accordance with public life for 21 prahar (around three days) of silence,” Pragya Thakur tweeted in Hindi.

This means that the Bharatiya Janata Party leader will end her silence on Thursday, the day when the 2019 Lok Sabha and assembly elections will be announced. Thakur spurred controversy, after she said Nathuram Godse was “a patriot, is a patriot, and will remain a patriot those who call him a terrorist should look within they will get a reply in this election”. Later, BJP said that this was her personal opinion and Thakur eventually apologised for her remark.

Pragya Thakur, an accused in 2008 Malegaon blast, was on a "maun vrat" even last month, after saying that she was among the people who demolished Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992, and she was proud of it. She made this statement in an interview to news channel TV9.
