Mumbai, July 23: Since the roads in Mumbai are in a dangerous condition, pushing the traffic at a snail's pace, five corporators of BMC, all from Goregoan, are now travelling in Mumbai's local train to attend the meeting of the civic body. As per a news report in the Mumbai Mirror, the corporators have swapped their cars for local trains as they believe that the city's pothole-ridden roads have made their drive from the suburban regions excruciatingly long.
The five corporators are Deepak Thakur (Ward No. 50), Rajul Desai (Ward No. 56), Srikala Pillai (Ward No. 57) and Sandeep Patel (Ward No. 58), and Shiv Sena corporator Swapnil Tembwalkar (Ward No. 51) who travelled from Goregaon to Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) on Thursday to attend the general body meeting of the BMC. Patel was quoted as saying, "Every time a new IAS officer takes over, the city gets a new technique to repair roads. The cold mix technology has failed, and citizens hold us (corporators) responsible for bad roads."
The report mentions that another corporator Srikala Pillai has decided to take the train until the rains abate, for which she has taken a monthly pass.
Astonishingly, the Mumbai civic body is led by the Shiv Sena. However, the Sena party corporator themselves are seemed to be helpless in addressing the woes. One of the five corporators, Swapnil Tembwalkar, belongs to the Sena; he has accused the BJP-led state government of the bad condition of roads, due to the ongoing metro construction work.
As the pothole-ridden roads are adding to the woes of the citizens, one Mumbaikar has applied to the Guinness World Book of Records and Limca Book of Records, in a bid to get global attention. The Mumbai's Congress city President Sanjay Nirupam has also started a campaign to show the grim picture of pothole roads to the ruling parties. Nirupam in his recently launched campaign has asked the citizens to click a picture of the potholes and send it to the authority by participating in their #Chalo_Potholes_Ginne_ campaign, which means let's count the potholes.
