Mangaluru, July 31: In a rear goof-up, the traffic police in Karnataka's Mangaluru district fined an auto-rickshaw driver for "not wearing helmet". The incident was reported from Puttur town, where the driver was penalised on Monday.

As per the challan issued to the driver, identified as Vittal, by the Manguluru police, he was charged for two offences - carrying more than three passengers and "not wearing helmet". The image of the challan went viral on social media.

While the first offence - carrying more than permissible limit of passengers - was justified as locals as well as the driver admitted that the rickshaw was loaded with nine children - way above the permissible mark. The second offence, however, left people amazed as wearing helmets is not mandatory for rickshaw drivers.

According to reports, the traffic police personnel of Puttur rectified their mistake and recalled the challan, numbered PTR – 94807159, which was issued to Vittal.

The police, however, is yet to issue a clarification message. On being contacted by reporters, the police personnel of Puttur Rural and Puttur Traffic said they are "unaware" of any such incident.
