Mumbai, December 27: Mumbai Police's Economic Offences Wing (EOW) on Friday submitted first chargesheet in Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative (PMC) Bank scam against five people. The accused who were named in the chargesheet, include former PMC Bank managing director Joy Thomas and Sujit Arora. The Mumbai police also named former chairman of the bank Waryan Singh, and promoters of Housing Development and Infrastructure Ltd (HDIL) -- Rakesh and Sarang Wadhwan. The chargesheet was filed in Esplanade Court. A few days back, a separate chargesheet was also filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the scam. In September, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had imposed regulatory restrictions on the PMC Bank after Rs 4,355-crore scam surfaced. The RBI also had restricted activities of the PMC Bank for six months and asked it not to grant or renew any loans and advances. Earlier this month, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in the Lok Sabha that early 78 per cent of depositors of Punjab and Maharashtra Corporation bank were now allowed to withdraw their entire account balance. According to reports, five people also lost their lives while protesting against the PMC Bank authorities. Founded in 1984, the PMC Bank has branches in Maharashtra, Delhi, Karnataka, Goa, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The investigation into the scam revealed that PMC Bank lost around Rs 4,335.46 Crore since 2008, due to the discrepancies by the bank officials.
