New Delhi, October 13: Damyanti Ben Modi, niece of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was robbed by two bike-borne miscreants who fled with her purse. The incident took place near the Civil Lines in North Delhi on Saturday. Following the incident, the Delhi Police launched a manhunt and identified two criminals who snatched handbag of Damyanti Ben Modi, daughter of PM Narendra Modi's brother. Damyanti Ben arrived in the national capital from Amritsar on Saturday morning and took an auto-rickshaw to the Civil Lines. At around 7 am, she reached the Gujarati Samaj Bhawan. While she was getting off from the three-wheeler, two miscreants riding a scooty arrived, snatched her purse and fled. The handbag contained Rs 50,000 in cash, two mobile phones and some documents, she told news agency IANS.
"I came to Delhi and reached Gujarati Samaj Bhavan on Saturday morning. I was scheduled to take a flight for Gujarat in the evening. I was getting off the auto-rickshaw when the snatchers targeted me," she was quoted as saying. Notably, the crime took place a few kilometres from the residence of Delhi's Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
Based on Damyanti Ben's complaint, the Delhi Police registered a case under Sections 356 (assault or criminal force in attempt to commit theft of property carried by a person) and 379 (punishment for theft) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Cops scanned CCTV footages and identified two accused. One of the accused, identified as Gaurav alias Nonu, has been arrested. The other accused is one Badal.
Aam Aadmi Party leader Raghav Chadha, in a statement, questioned the law and order situation in the national capital. "With each passing day, the law and order situation is going from bad to worse. The alacrity that Delhi Police shows in chasing political opponents of the BJP, is completely absent when it comes to providing safety to the people of Delhi," he said.
