Launched in 2014, the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is one of the pet projects of Prime Minister Modi. The programme aims to rid the nation of open defecation -- a societal blot which has existed due to the lack of toilets despite seven decades of independence.

Over the past five years, the government has succeeded in building 90 million toilets, as per the official figures. Several towns and villages have, in the process, being declared "open defecation free (ODF)".

Notably, Modi is scheduled to address the gathering of world leaders in New York at the UNGA on September 27. His visit to the country will begin much before, with the Prime Minister being scheduled to address over 50,000 people at "Howdy! Modi", a town hall-styled event organised by the Indian diaspora in Houston, Texas.
