PM Narendra Modi Lays Foundation Stone For Two Metro Corridors in Thane

The CIDCO housing project is likely to accommodate 89,771 families under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

Mumbai, December 18: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday laid the foundation stone for two metro corridors and CIDCO housing scheme in Thane. Later in the day, he is scheduled to visit Pune and there too lay the foundation stone for the third metro line between Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar. All the projects are expected to cost the exchequer Rs 41,000 crore.

The stone laying ceremony for metro projects for the two-phase – Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan metro 5 and Dahisar-Mira Bhayander metro-9 – took place at Kalyan in Thane district. According to the plan, the 24.9-km long Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan metro-5 corridor is expected to carry around 2.29 lakh commuters daily and would be completed by 2021 at a cost of Rs 8,416-crore. The corridor will have 17 stations, and the entire system is designed for six-coach trains. Also, the other metro project – Dahisar-Mira Bhayander metro-9 – is a 10.3-km elevated corridor, which would comprise eight stations and is most likely to get completed by 2022. Officials say that the project would cost the exchequer Rs 6,607 crore. Both the projects would be executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

Among the other project that PM Modi laid the foundation stone for include Rs. 18,000 crore City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra's (CIDCO) mass housing scheme, which is likely to house around 89,771 families under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

On a similar note, the Prime Minister would also lay stone for the third line of the Pune Metro rail project at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Sports complex in Balewadi. As per to the plan, the 23.3 km stretch would connect city’s bustling information technology quarter in Hinjewadi with the equally heavy traffic Shivajinagar area. For this project, Rs. 8,313 crore has been estimated, and it would be developed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).
