Puducherry, January 13: Puducherry plastic ban is all set to come into effect from March 1, 2019. Puducherry government's move to ban plastic in the union territory was confirmed by Puducherry Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy. On December 31, a nominated Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA V Saminathan caused a flutter on the premises of Pondy Assembly hall by staging sudden dharna urging the government to ban the sale, production, and use of plastic in the union territory. In March 2018, the Maharashtra government announced a ban on the sale, use, and production of plastic products in the state. Since the ban, plastic industry has been rallying together for the dilution of the law. Plastic manufacturers called the ban unreasonable while ecologists welcomed the move. According to urban bodies in the state, the plastic waste has seen a drop by 40 per cent following a ban.
