Mumbai, October 1: Mumbai Airport has declared that it will be 100 percent free of single-use plastic by October 2. According to a Times of India report, the airport has banned all single-use plastic items like disposable cutlery, thermocol items, bubble wraps, disposable dish, bowl and plastic straws. The plastic items have been replaced with steel straws at the GVK lounge, cutlery and other items made of cloth.
The BMC release has further appealed the citizens not to use any plastic items and to dispose of the ones which are at their homes at the nearest ward. A fine of Rs 5,000 for the first offence, Rs 10,000 for the second and imprisonment up to 3 months can be imposed for violating the rule. A nationwide ban on plastic is set to be implemented in India from October 2, on the day of Gandhi Jayanti. Once the ban is in place, single-use plastic including plastic bags, cups, straws among other items will be out from cities and villages. From October 2, which also happens to be the birth anniversary Mahatma Gandhi, a nationwide ban on as many as six items will be imposed. Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a big push to environmental concerns and pledged to phase out single-use plastic from the nation by 2022.
