Chandipur, December 20: Pinaka Missile System developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) was again successfully tested on Friday at 11:00 am from Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, off the Odisha coast. It was the second trial of the Pinaka Missile System in last two days. The extended range version of the missile can hit targets at 90 km. According to the Defence Ministry, The mission objective of today’s trial was to test low range, functioning of live warhead along with its proximity initiation and salvo launch. Two Pinaka missiles were launched in salvo mode with 60 seconds interval between two firings. Both the missiles were fired to engage a target located at 20 km range, and high accuracy was achieved.

The missile was integrated with a live warhead with a proximity fuse and was tracked by multiple range systems including telemetry, radars and Electro-Optical Tracking System (EOTS). Each Pinaka battery consists of six launcher vehicles each with 12 rockets. It also has six loader-replenishment vehicles; three replenishment vehicles; two Command Post vehicle (one stand by) with a Fire Control computer, and the DIGICORA MET radar. A battery of six launchers can neutralise an area of 1,000 m × 800 m. The missile system id developed for the Indian Army.
