New Delhi, Sept 9: Fuel prices were hiked again across the nation on Sunday, with petrol rates jumping to Rs 80.50 per litre and Rs 87.89 per litre in Delhi and Mumbai, respectively. Surge in diesel prices also continues unabated, as the fuel rate jumped by 10 paise in Delhi, to be sold at Rs 72.61 per litre. In Mumbai, the price of diesel has accelerated to Rs 77.09, whereas, motorists in Chennai and Kolkata will have to pay Rs 76.75 and Rs 75.46, respectively.

Fuel prices are revised on daily basis by oil corporations. The upswing in rates is largely due to the rise in global crude oil prices, which are hovering around $76 per barrel. Weakening of the rupee against the US dollar has further burdened the Indian consumers.
Notably, petrol prices this year have jumped by Rs 10.41 in Delhi, where it was being sold at Rs 69.97 per litre till January 1. Diesel prices have been raised by Rs 12.81 since the onset of this year.
Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said one of the long-term measures to bring fuel prices in check is bring them under the ambit of the Goods & Services Tax. Pradhan blamed the states for adding to the burden of motorists by imposing heavy duties.
