New Delhi/Mumbai, October 4: The petrol price hit the Rs 84 per litre mark in Delhi on Thursday, and diesel price crossed Rs 80 per litre mark in Mumbai as fuel rates continued to soar on Thursday. Petrol and diesel prices saw an increase of 15 and 20 paise respectively in the national capital. In Mumbai, petrol price was hiked by 14 paise and diesel 21 paise.

After the revision, petrol is being sold at Rs 84 per litre in Delhi and diesel costs Rs 75.45 per litre. A litre of petrol now costs Rs 91.34 in Mumbai and diesel is being priced at Rs 80.10. Petrol prices in the other metro cities of Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru on Thursday were Rs 85.65, Rs 87.19 and Rs 84.52 per litre respectively. Fuel Stations in India Are Getting Ready to Display Three-Digit Rates, Rs 100 per Litre May Become Reality.

Diesel is being sold at Rs 75.64 per litre in Bengaluru, Rs 77.10 in Kolkata and Rs 79.57 in Chennai. Fuel prices have been witnessing a steep rise since the past few weeks. The opposition has blamed the Modi government for not doing enough to keep a check on prices; the latter has maintained that international factors are causing a hike in prices of petroleum products.

According to sector experts, high rate of excise duty leads to high domestic fuel prices across the country. Delhi has the cheapest fuel rates among all metros and most state capitals because of lower taxes. Mumbai has the highest sales tax or VAT. India is the third largest importer of crude oil and rising international oil prices are inflating domestic transport fuel costs.
