Mumbai, September 27: Petrol and diesel prices continued to rise on Thursday, September 27, a day after there was no change in the cost of fuel. In fact, the cost of fuel saw a steep hike of 13 paise today. In Mumbai, the price of petrol today went to Rs 90.35 per litre while diesel was at Rs 78.82 per litre as compared to Rs 90.22 per litre and Rs 78.69 per litre respectively yesterday.

In Delhi, the price of petrol today was Rs 83 per litre while the cost of diesel was Rs 74.24 per litre. In Kolkata, petrol and diesel prices were at Rs 84.82 per litre and Rs 76.09 per litre respectively. Experts in the oil industry have speculated that prices of petrol could hit a 'century' (Rs 100 mark) in Mumbai well before Diwali.

Delhi has the cheapest fuel rates among all metros and most state capitals because of lower taxes. Retail prices are arrived at after adding excise duty, which is charged by the Central government, commission paid to petrol pumps dealers and VAT, charged by the state governments. The central government has ruled out any reduction in excise duty for now.

The Opposition led by Congress has been attacking the Narendra Modi government over rising fuel prices. There has been a demand to bring fuel under the purview of Goods and Services Tax (GST) to bring down the prices. However, there has been no significant move in this regard yet.
