Pamban Sea Bridge Connecting Rameswaram to Mainland India to be Equipped With New 'Vertical-Lift Bridge'

The project will cost Rs 250 crore, and is expected to be completed in the next four years, a senior government official said. The approval was given by the Ministry of Railways on Monday.

New Delhi, December 30: The 104-year-old Pamban Sea Bridge, connecting Rameswaram with mainland India, will be equipped with a high-tech bridge with "vertical lift" capacity. The bridge will replace a two-kilometre-long intersection -- to avoid which -- the cargo vessels and steamers had to take a longer route to reach the dock.

Earlier in the month, the Pamban railway cantilever bridge was turned temporarily dysfunctional due to a technical snag.

Although repair works were carried out, the Railways had approached the government seeking nod for a new bridge.

The 100-year old meter gauge bridge had been modified some years ago to operate broad gauge trains and since then problems have cropped up, Southern Railway Chief Bridge Engineer Ravindra Babu.
