Mumbai, August 31: After the Narendra Modi government scrapped the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, several fake accounts with Indian names have been made by Pakistan for spreading false news. The accounts are spreading false information about the alleged genocide in the Valley by the Indian forces. Special Inspector General of Police, Maharashtra cyber cell Brijesh Singh said, “These accounts are posting inflammatory content. It was observed that such things are being done from the Pakistan side, a campaign is being undertaken.”
The senior official further added, “Fake videos are being circulated, and photos are being used out of context to show as if genocide is taking place in Kashmir. Singh also asked people to verify information, He also said that people should not forward it at once especially if there's anti-national content where India, Army and police are being shown in bad light. Singh further added, "They might've been manufactured to damage reputation of our national institutions." After the Centre diluted Article 370 on August 5, various images and videos have surfaced on social media showing protests in Jammu and Kashmir. Several foreign media outlets are also reported protests in Kashmir. However, the Indian government time and again refuted these reports and maintained that apart from one or two minor incidents, the situation is normal in the Valley.
Meanwhile, internet services and landlines are still suspended in Kashmir. According to Jammu and Kashmir administration, the restrictions are imposed in the Valley so that Pakistan-backed mischievous elements should not get any opportunity to spread fake news.
