Vadodara, July 27: The Pani Puri lovers in the city are going to be a tad disappointed as the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has come cracking down on the vendors. Following the rising cases of diseases like jaundice and typhoid in the city, there is a ban imposed on the favoured street food of the people. The municipal corporation raided several vendors selling Pani Puri or Golgappas and found them unhygienic.

In the major crackdown, food safety officers destroyed nearly 7,350kg of material along with 1,200 litres of the panipuri water. The quality of these preparations was under the scanner for a while after it was found that the water was of very poor quality. Also, the places where the material to make the snack was stored was unclean. These panipuris were affecting the health of the people and the epidemic of jaundice was on a rise. The Pani Puri water was found to be stinking and the potatoes were rotten. Almost 3,500 kgs of potatoes and kabuli chana majorly used in making the snack were thrown away by the officials. Officials raided areas of Hujrat Paga, Hathikhana, Tulsiwadi, Sama, Chhani, Khodiyarna, Navayard, Warasiya, Sudamanagar and other areas of the city. More than 50 sellers were checked and the quality was very poor. According to a news report, the panipuri now remains banned until the overall health condition of the city is improved.

While diseases like typhoid and jaundice do see a rise in the monsoon season, the panipuri and other roadside stalls were also majorly responsible for the outbreak. So until the quality improves, the Pani Puri lovers will have to wait.
