Outside Food in Multiplexes May be a Security Threat: Maharashtra Government Takes U-Turn in Bombay High Court

Mumbai, August 8: The Maharashtra Government has taken a u-turn from its earlier stance to allow carrying eatables inside multiplexes. The government today has filed an affidavit in the Bombay High Court changing its earlier stance. The Fadnavis government told the court that outside food might be a security threat. However, the high court pulled up the government for its argument. The court said, “How can people carrying food inside theatres be a security threat when they are carrying it for self-consumption?” The court also observed that by restraining people from carrying their homemade food inside theatres, the government is compelling then to eat junk food.
However, On July 13, Maharashtra Food Supplies Minister Ravindra Chavan during the Assembly Session in Nagpur said that there was no restriction on taking outside food in cinema halls, theatres, and multiplexes. Chavan assured that the action would be taken against the theatres' employees and owners if people are denied from carrying outside food. He also added that there could not be a different price tag on the same food product sold at multiplexes and outside.
The Maharashtra Food Supplies Minister also stated that after August 1st, the eatables have to be sold at the MRP rates, which include bottled cold-drinks, chips packet, etc. In June, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) party workers assaulted a theatre manager in Pune for eatables being sold at exorbitant prices. A video of the same went viral.
