Amritsar, June 6: Security has been beefed up at the famous Golden Temple in Amritsar on the 35th anniversary of Operation Blue Star on Thursday. In June 1984, the Indian Army had carried out Operation Blue Star in June 1984 to flush out militants hiding in the Golden Temple complex. As there were apprehensions that Sikh hardliners might create trouble in the Temple complex, security personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order and avert any untoward incident. Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Shiv Dular Singh was quoted by PTI saying that a ban has been imposed on carrying any arms, including sharp-edged weapons, for the next five days in the city. Policemen have been deployed at all the entry and exit points of the city, including the airport, the railway station and the city bypass.
According to reports, vehicles coming into the city from outside are being checked to prevent the entry of any miscreants. Also, flag marches are being conducted in several areas and surveillance of vulnerable areas is being carried out through CCTV cameras.
Operation Blue Star
Operation Blue Star was the codename of an Indian military action carried out between 1 and 8 June 1984 to remove militant religious leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his followers from the buildings of the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) complex in Amritsar. The decision to launch the attack rested with Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Reports inform that the total number of deaths was 410 in violent incidents and riots while 1,180 people were injured.
On Wednesday, Jathedar of Akal Takht (highest temporal seat of Sikhs), Giani Harpreet Singh, and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president, Gobind Singh Longowal appealed to the Sikh community to maintain peace while observing the anniversary of Operation Blue Star.
