Thane, December 14: In an incident of online fraud, an Intelligence Bureau (IB) official was duped for over Rs 98,000 by cyber fraudsters impersonating an employee of a nationalised bank in Maharashtra’s Thane district. The victim has been identified as 58-year-old Atul Tembe. The incident took place in the first week of December. According to a report published in The Free Press Journal, the victim received a call on December 2 from a person who identified himself as Dinesh Mehra, an employee of a nationalised bank. At that time, Tembe was in Solapur. However, the victim disconnected the call as he was busy. The next day, Tembe again received a call from Mehra. The victim was aginst busy as he was at a temple in Pandharpur.

Mehra again called the victim and informed the victim that the bank was changing the credit cards of all the customers as per Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) guidelines. The accused told Tembe that the validity of his new card would be till 2027. “Mehra then told the victim to write down the request ID number and told him that he would receive a confirmation call from the bank and that he needs to share the request ID with the person,” reported the media house quoting a police officer as saying. Online Fraud In Pune: 65-Year-Old Man Duped Of Rs 3.16 Lakh By Cyber Fraudsters On Pretext of High Returns on Investments.

Mehra tricked the victim into sharing his existing card details, including OTP. The accused swindled Rs 98,721 using his card details. Upon realising that he was being duped, Tembe approached the police. On the basis of the complaint filed by the victim, a case has been registered a case under sections 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the relevant sections of the Information Technology Act. The police have launched a detailed investigation into the matter.
