Earlier, the government of Kerala, in wake of the devastating floods that has killed more than 400 people and displaced over a million people in the state, decided to cancel the official Onam festivities.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan reportedly announced the decision after the weekly Cabinet meeting held on August 14, according to the English language daily The Hindu.
The Kerala Chief Minister was quoted saying by the paper that it would be grossly inappropriate on the part of the government to celebrate Onam when "thousands of our fellow beings are suffering."
The Kerala government, on Wednesday, blamed the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu for floods in the state. The state government alleged that its neighbouring state refused to lower the water level in the Mullaperiyar Dam. Kerala today filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court in which its government claimed that the sudden release of water from the Mullaperiyar Dam was the main cause for the massive floods which around 400 people died.
