Bhubaneswar, June 3: At least eight people have been killed in Odisha due to thunderstorm and lightning in parts of the state on Sunday. According to a tweet by ANI, out of the eight killed, 2 each were killed in Koraput, Kendujhar, Jajpur and Ganjam districts. Apart from the deceased, five people have been injured, 2 in Koraput and 3 in Dhenkanal. The injured ones have been admitted to hospitals. Odisha on Alert Again: Thunderstorm, Lightning Likely to Occur Days After Cyclone Fani.

On Sunday, the IMD Regional Centre in Odisha had issued thunderstorm warning for at least 10 districts of Odisha. According to reports, districts including Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Kandhamal, Balangir, Boudh, Kalahandi and Malkangiri experienced moderate thunderstorm or lighting accompanied by light to moderate rainfall with gusty winds.

In the wake of the delay in arrival of the southwest monsoon, the meteorological department has predicted mild rainfall and thunderstorm before the pre-monsoon showers in several parts of the State in next few days. However,  the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar informed that with the onset of monsoon in Kerala by the first weekend of June, Odisha is likely to receive monsoon a week later.
