Bhubaneswar, October 12: Three men's failed attempt to rescue a cat from a 60-foot-deep well near Patia Railway Station in Odisha ended in tragedy on Wednesday, with one of them losing his life along with the pet. Sibaram Sahoo (51), an ice cream seller, was identified as the dead.
Two other men, including the deceased's elder brother Bhajaram (53) and Sankar Das (35), who had climbed down into the well to save Sibaram, were retrieved by firefighters and are said to be doing well. Rajasthan: Man Drowns while Performing Last Rites of Mother in Pushkar Lake.
We were alerted about the event at 3 pm on October 12 and raced to the spot. We used a ladder and rope to rescue the three men. They were transferred to the Patia community health clinic, where medics declared Sibaram dead upon arrival, Abani Kumar Swain, a fire and emergency service official told TOI.
We noticed him labouring in the water because the well was so deep. We tossed him a rope, but he couldn't grip it since he had practically lost consciousness. We alerted Bhajaram and requested assistance from the fire department. Later, Bhajaram and Sankar used the rope to descend into the well. Previously in August 2023, an elderly man drowned while bathing in a pond in the Birmaharajpur region of Odisha's Sonepur district. Uddhav Pradhan (70), of Bharatapur in Sambalpur district, has been identified as the dead. According to reports, Uddhav and his wife Malati (65) visited Kardapal village in Sonepur's Birmaharajpur police limits to meet their daughter and son-in-law. The pair had gone for a swim in a pond when the man died after falling into the water.
