‘Odisha Rasagola’ Gets GI Tag, Two Years After West Bengal Won Rasgulla Tag

The bitter-sweet war between Odisha and West Bengal of ownership over Rasagola or Rasgulla has taken a new turn. The Geographical Indication (GI) Registry of India has given GI tag to 'Odisha Rasagola' on Monday. In 2017, West Bengal walked away with GI tag for 'Rasgulla'.

Bhubaneshwar, July 29: The bitter-sweet war between Odisha and West Bengal for ownership over Rasagola or Rasgulla has taken a new turn. The Geographical Indication (GI) Registry of India has given GI tag to 'Odisha Rasagola' on Monday, July 29. In 2017, West Bengal walked away with GI tag for 'Rasgulla'. The Odisha Small Industries Corporation Limited (OSIC)and Utkala Mistanna Byabasayee Samiti have been registered holder or proprietor of Odisha Rasagola's GI tag. OSIC has named all districts in the state as geographical areas to use the GI tag and said that the sweet delicacy is associated with world-famous Puri Jagannath Temple.

GI tag for Odisha Rasagola:

As per "Niladri Bije" rituals, the rasagola is offered to Devi Laxmi on behalf of Shree Jagannath. According to The Indian Express, Odisha Rasagola will make its place in Class 30 of GI tagged products. The other products in the list are tea, coffee, sugar, tapioca, sago, rice, flour among others.
