Puri, May 29: In a shocking incident, a 56-year-old man was allegedly strangled to death by his own son in Saharatikra village under the jurisdiction of Bheden police in Odisha. The incident occurred on Monday night, according to local authorities.
According to a report published by The New Indian Express, the victim, identified as Mangnia Seth, was a respected business owner of a fabrication unit. His younger son, Gopal Seth (28), is the prime suspect in the case. Gopal, known for his struggles with drug addiction and alcoholism, had recently been released from a de-addiction centre. Sources close to the family revealed that Gopal frequently argued with his father over minor issues. On the fateful night, Mangnia retired to sleep on the terrace of his house. The following morning, his wife discovered his lifeless body with visible signs of strangulation and knee injuries.
Upon receiving the news, Bheden police, accompanied by a scientific team, promptly arrived at the scene and seized the body for autopsy. Bheden IIC Premjit Das stated, "Our preliminary investigation suggests that Mangnia died due to strangulation. We have detained Gopal for questioning and are investigating if he was involved in any past criminal activities." Talmenda's Sarpanch, Ashwini Das, confirmed Gopal's dependency on alcohol and drugs. Despite spending six months in a rehabilitation centre, Gopal reportedly failed to reform his ways. "Mangnia was a jovial person with no known enemies. However, his younger son often quarrelled with him. There was an incident where Gopal attacked his father with an iron rod, which was reported to the local police. Mangnia, however, chose to resolve the matter privately with his son. Given these circumstances, we suspect Gopal's involvement in his father's untimely death," added Ashwini.
The police have registered a case, and further investigation is underway. Gopal is currently under interrogation and is expected to be formally arrested on Wednesday.
