Puri, January 4: A wild bear mauled two people at Nilagiri in Balasore on Wednesday morning, leaving them with serious wounds. The victims, Laxmidhar Nayak from Tanaka village and Sibasankar Singh from Baunsabania, were taken to Nilagiri Community Health Centre for treatment.
The New Indian Express reported that the bear had entered Tanaka village the previous night and wandered near Laxmidhar’s house. When Laxmidhar went to his backyard in the morning, he came face to face with the beast. He tried to escape by climbing a tree, but the bear caught his leg and bit it badly. Laxmidhar’s cries alerted the villagers, who came to his rescue. The bear was frightened by the crowd and fled to Baunsabania village, where it attacked Sibasankar. The forest officials of Nilagiri range were informed about the incident, and they arrived at the scene. They took the injured pair to the hospital. The villagers demanded that the Forest department should do regular night patrolling in the area, as elephants and bears often intrude into human habitats. In December last year, two wild elephants killed two young men in Bargarh district in separate attacks. The victims were Sibalal Suna from Kathaumal village in Gaisilet block and Baladeb Sahu, also known as Balaram, from Bisipali village in Bheden block. Sibalal, a canal worker, was returning from his work site on Sunday morning with his co-workers. He encountered a tusker on the way and could not escape. The elephant lifted him and crushed him to death. In another attack, Balaram, a farmer, was heading to his rice field when an elephant ambushed him and mauled him. The police retrieved the bodies for autopsy, and the Forest Department officials started investigations into the incidents.
