Odisha: Baripada-Balasore DMU Train Runs Over Labourer, Motorman Halts Train to Save His Life
The tragic incident took place soon after the train left Bhanjpur station. The train driver, who was piloting the Baripada-Balasore DMU train early on Wednesday morning, has been identified as B Narayan Rao.
Bhubaneswar, July 10: In an act of bravery, a train driver in Odisha saved life of a man who was run over by the train which he was driving. The tragic incident took place soon after the train left Bhanjpur railway station in Baripada city of the state. The train driver, who was piloting the Baripada-Balasore DMU train early on Wednesday morning, has been identified as B Narayan Rao. According to a report by Hindustan Times, the train ran over daily labourer Chittaranjan Hati at 3.22 AM on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. Soon after the incident, the train driver halted the train and took the injured labourer to the hospital. Minutes after the train ran over Hati’s legs, the driver halted the train and carried the injured man to the Baripada railway station. From there, the victim where then taken to Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital in Baripada town. Both the legs of the victim were severed due to the accident. The condition of the victim was so critical that had the driver left him there, he would have died due to massive bleeding. “We have so far given him 4 litres of blood. His condition is however critical”, doctors said. According to the HT report, the driver said that it was his duty to carry the injured man to the nearest railway station as there are rules set by Indian Railways.
Dr BN Rout who first treated the injured man at the hospital said, “The driver had shown his presence of mind and carried one of the severed legs. "He could not find the other leg due to darkness”, Rout said. When Rao was contacted, he said he didn’t do anything great and any person in his place would have done the same thing to save the life of the injured.
