Kendrapara, January 2: In a tragic incident, a fishing boat carrying more than 30 picnickers capsized at the confluence of Mahanadi river and Bay of Bengal in Odisha’s Kendrapara district on Wednesday. Two people were reportedly drowned while seven missing in the incident. The victims were returning from Kojang in Jagatsinghpur district to Hukitola in Kendrapara when the boat capsized. There were also several children on the boat. “The boat capsized near the confluence point of the river and sea. So far, two bodies have been fished out. At least seven are missing,” reported Hindustan Times quoting Kendrapara superintendent of police Niti Shekhar as saying. Recuse operations are underway. Local firemen are trying to rescue other people on the boat. However, the main reason of the incident has yet not ascertained, but officials are suspecting overloading as the cause of the tragedy.
In January last year, at least five people lost their lives after a boat capsized in river Ganga in Patna’s Fatuah. The boat was carrying more than 15 people. The Bihar government had announced Rs. 4 lakh compensation to the families of those who killed in the boat capsize incident in Patna's Fatuha.
