New Delhi, December 18: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Hansraj Ahir on Tuesday informed the Lok Sabha that the government is not proposing to extend the National Registrar of Citizens (NRC) to states other than Assam.

Ahir submitted a written reply in the parliament during the Winter Session, stating, “The exercise to update NRC 1951 is being conducted under the special provisions in respect of State of Assam under the Citizenship Act, 1955 and the Citizenship rules, 2003. At present, there is no proposal to extend the NRC to states other than Assam.” NRC Row: 'Every Indian Name in Voter List Should be Included', Demands Ex-Assam CM Tarun Gogoi.

Earlier the Supreme Court has sought a reply from the central government to implement the NRC in Tripura, based on a petition requesting its implementation in the state. To this, the government had answered that there was no proposal to revise the NRC in Tripura.

According to the Assam NRC draft released on July 30 this year, around 40.07 lakh people were left out, and a massive protest took place in the country. The draft focussed to ‘legitimate’ citizens of Assam against ‘illegal migrants’ from Bangladesh.

Claiming that the draft document would be implemented in all the neighbouring states too, BJP had stated that they would identify all illegal immigrants from Bangladesh in India and expel them, one by one.
