New Delhi, July 31: The Assam Transgender Association is awaiting the Supreme Court's response on a petition filed by them seeking the Court's intervention to include their names in the National Register of Citizens (NRC), 1951.  According to a tweet by ANI, advocate Prateek Hajela on Tuesday informed that the court has not given any order on the petition that was filed by the Assam Transgender Association.

“There is a petition that has been filed by Assam Transgender Association on which the court has not given an order today. It may give an order on it in the next hearing which is on August 16”, Hajela said.'

The transgenders in Assam had decided to file a petition in the Supreme Court on July 22. President of the All Assam Transgenders' Association Swati Bidhan Baruah had earlier said that they decided to move the apex court as the NRC was being updated under the apex court's supervision.

On Monday, the government had released the final draft of National Register of Citizens list with names of 28,983,677 citizens in Assam. However, around 40 lakh people have been left out of the list. The first draft of the NRC process was released on December 31, last year in which around 1.9 crore people out of the total application of 3.29 crore were included.

According to a PTI report, the NRC included the names of all Indian citizens who have been residing in Assam before March 25, 1971. The application process for the NRC started in May 2015 and a total of 6.5 crore documents were received from 68.27 lakh families across Assam.

Talking about people whose names did not appear in the final draft, Registrar General of India Sailesh said that the process for making claims and objections will begin on August 30 and continue till September 28. “Adequate and ample scope will be given to people for making objections. No genuine Indian citizen should have any fear”, he added.
