lmost an hour after the National Register of Citizens (NRC) list was released on Saturday, a 60-year-old jumped into a well after hearing rumours that her name was not on the list. The woman was identified as Sayera Begum. Later, it was found that Begum along with her husband and son, was included in the list.
Guwahati, August 31: Nearly an hour after the final list National Register of Citizens (NRC) list was released on Saturday, a 60-year-old woman committed suicide as she heard rumours that her name was not in the list. The woman was identified as Sayera Begum. She belonged to Sonitpur district of the state. Over 19 lakh people were excluded from the final NRC list of the total 3,30,27, 661 applicants. According to a report by Associated Press, the woman jumped into a well as she came to know that her name was not in the NRC list. Later, it was found that Begum along with her husband and son, was included in the list. The woman was taken to a nearby hospital, but she died. Meanwhile, MLA of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) Ananta Kumar Malo was also not included in the list. Even, former President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed’s family was left out of NRC final list. Earlier, in the day, the final list of the NRC of Assam was released. Over 19 lakh people left out from the list. The final list of NRC which is available online has names of over three crore people. However, the Central government has clarified that those excluded from the final NRC list would not be declared foreigner.
The main purpose of NRC is to weed out illegal foreigners from Assam. People can check the full list online at nrcassam.nic.in and thefinalnrc.com. The first part of the draft NRC, called Part Draft NRC, was published in December, 2017 and included the names of 1.9 crore people out of the 3.29 crore applicants.
