Guwahati, June 21: An additional list to the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) for Assam published on July 30 last year, will be released on June 26, officials said. The new additional list will have names of people who were included in the final draft of NRC but were later found ineligible or wrongfully included in the draft. According to a report by Hindustan Times, an official on request on anonymity, said the ‘additional exclusion list’ will contain only the names of those who figured in the complete draft list published in July 2018 but are subsequently found ineligible for inclusion due to various reasons.

In the NRC draft released in 2018, a total of 2.89 crore of the 3.29 crore applicants were included. The names of 40,70,707 people did not figure in the list. Of these, 37,59,630 names have been rejected and the remaining 2,48,077 are on hold.  Reports inform that the ones who were excluded to the list were given a chance to appeal in the ‘claims and objections’ round. According to reports, among the 2.89 crore people, about 36 lakh people filed their ‘claims’,  while more than 2 lakh people filed ‘objections’.  Citizenship Amendment Bill Debate: Govt Committed Towards NRC But Can’t Give Citizenship to Illegal Migrants, Says Rajnath Singh in Lok Sabha.

The Supreme Court has set July 31 as the date of publication of the final NRC. According to a report by the Indian Express, the additional draft list of exclusion will include the ones who were found ineligible upon re-verification or during the hearings for the ‘claims and objections’ round.

On Thursday, while addressing the Parliament after the formation of the 17th Lok Sabha, President Ram Nath Kovind told the joint session of the Parliament that the Centre has decided to implement the NRC, which is being updated in Assam at present, on priority basis in areas affected by infiltration.

The aim of the National Register of Citizens(NRC)  is to separate genuine Indian citizens from undocumented immigrants living in Assam. According to the rules and regulations of the NRC, anyone who cannot prove that they or their ancestors entered Assam before midnight on March 24, 1971, will be declared a foreigner.
