New Delhi, January 22: Cold waves continued to grip several states in North India with fresh snowfall across Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Uttarakhand on Tuesday. Meanwhile, in Delhi, rain and hailstorm lashed several areas, causing inconvenience to lakhs of commuters. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi is all set to receive another spell of winter rains on Tuesday. "Generally cloudy conditions with light to moderate rainfall at most places and isolated thunderstorm activity accompanied with strong surface winds most likely during January 21 and 22," the IMD said. Residents in Delhi will witness cloudy sky and light rain or drizzle with gusty winds throughout the day, the weather agency added. The minimum and maximum temperature likely to be around 9 and 21 degrees Celsius respectively. The change in the weather has been caused due to Western Disturbance. The IMD warned that another Western Disturbance would affect Northwest India from January 24 onwards. The heavy snowfall in these states has impacted the temperature of North India. Delhi and its surrounding areas have been witnessing a sudden spell of rains accompanied by thundershowers since Monday. On Monday, the national capital received rains, a day after recording the warmest January day since 2012 on Sunday.

In Jammu and Kashmir, fresh snowfall has been reported in the higher reaches and rains lashed the plains. The Jammu-Srinagar highway has been shut following landslides and snowfall and reports of an avalanche hitting the highway in the Jawahar Tunnel area. Traffic department officials said landslides have hit the strategic highway at some places.

In Himachal Pradesh, heavy snowfall has enveloped Shimla, Mandi, Kullu, Kinnaur, Chamba, Kangra, Lahaul and Spiti district since the last few days. The MeT Office has forecast widespread rain and snow over the state with heavy falls at isolated places till Tuesday.
