North India Continues to Shiver, Rainfall Likely Over Delhi, Punjab, Haryana During Next 24 Hours, Says IMD

New Delhi, January 21: Several north Indian states continued to shiver under severe cold wave conditions with the minimum temperatures settling in minus in several parts. Parts of Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh have been recording cold and severe cold day conditions due to chilly northwesterly winds caused by Western Disturbance (WD). The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday stated that a fresh WD is likely to cause light isolated rainfall over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi during the next 24 hours.

The WD, a storm originating in the Mediterranean region that brings winter rains, is also likely to bring scattered to widespread rain and snow over several states in the north on Tuesday. This will be the sixth WD of January 2020. Another active WD is expected to bring rain and snow around January 27 and 28. "Dense fog likely in isolated parts over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during next 24 hours and over Odisha, Assam and Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during 48 hours in night/morning hours," the IMD bulletin said. North India Fog: Railway Services Affected, 25 Delhi-Bound Trains Delayed Due to Low Visibility. 

The IMD stated that the cold day conditions are very likely in isolated parts over Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh during the next 24 hours and it will improve thereafter. According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), the air quality in the national capital today plunged to 'very poor' category with overall AQI docked at 322.
