Noida, August 9: A private school in Noida’s Sector 132 has sparked controversy with a circular requesting parents not to send non-vegetarian food in their children’s lunch tiffins. The directive, issued on Wednesday by Delhi Public School’s principal Supriti Chauhan, cites health and safety concerns due to the hot and humid weather which could spoil non-vegetarian items quickly. The circular also mentions promoting inclusivity and respect by maintaining a vegetarian environment at school.

According to Hindustan Times report, the move has elicited mixed reactions from parents. Some support the school’s request, citing the health risks associated with non-vegetarian food and the predominance of vegetarian students. Pallavi Rai, a parent, argued that educational institutions should maintain a vegetarian environment as a matter of respect and tradition. Noida Police To Punish Parents if Minors Found Driving, Fine of up to INR 25,000 and No License Until Age 25.

However, others view the request as an infringement on parental rights to choose their children’s diet. Critics argue that restricting non-vegetarian options limits nutritional choices and imposes unnecessary dietary constraints. Manoj Kataria, founder of the Gautam Budh Nagar Parents Welfare Society, criticized the school for potentially disregarding cultural and personal food preferences of families. Delhi: Parents Allege ‘Private School in Prashant Vihar Makes Students Stay Back To Coerce Parents To Opt for School Transport’, Likely To Approach L-G Saxena and Education Minister Atishi Over Issue.

Principal Chauhan emphasised that the circular is merely a request and not a directive or ban. She clarified that such notices are issued annually and are intended to ensure student well-being and comfort.

District Inspector of Schools Dharmveer Singh stated that if parents have objections, they can raise their concerns with the education department, though the matter will not be addressed unless a formal complaint is lodged.
