Akshay Kumar's film Toilet: Ek Prem Katha may have addressed a very important issue of sanitation and the need for a toilet in every house. But in Tamil Nadu, a marriage took a miserable turn after a husband committed suicide since his wife left him. The wife left the house since there was no toilet in the house. Unable to handle the trauma, the husband jumped in a well and killed himself. Inspired by 'Toilet-Ek Prem Katha' Godikan Panchayat in Haryana Passes Resolution 'No Toilet No Bride'.
Selladurai and Deepa got married on September 23. It was a love marriage. But when Deepa learnt that there was no toilet in the house and she would have to go defecate in the open, she left the house at Kottagoundapatti in Omalur. Deepa left the house the very next day and said she would not mind living in a hotel until a toilet is constructed in the house.
Although Selladurai tried to convince Deepa to stay back, she did not listen and went away. She said she would not stay in the house with no toilet. The groom's family observed that he was upset when he came to the house. They found his body from the well on the next day. Police sent his body for autopsy and the district administration was also sent to the village to study the sanitation facilities. It came to fore than Salem village achieved the status of 'Open Defecation-Free District'. There were apparently more than 2 lakh toilets that were constructed here and the authorities also say there was a common toilet facility in the village. It is sad to see how a happy marriage has ended with the lack of sanitation facility.
