Nirmala Sitharaman Hits Back at Congress' 'Unfit Economy' Barb, Recalls UPA Era of 'Double Digit Inflation'

Sitharaman's remarks were triggered by the "unfit government, unfit economy" campaign launched by the Congress on social media. The party, across its Twitter handles, lambasted the Modi government over the ongoing economic slowdown which has reportedly led to job losses in some sectors.

New Delhi, August 29: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday trained guns at the Congress, accusing the erstwhile ruling party of running a "baseless" campaign to deride the economic policies of Narendra Modi government. Recalling the "soaring inflation" during UPA years, Sitharaman said the grand old party's campaign over the ongoing economic slowdown will not find any takers among the common people. Sitharaman Dismisses Criticism About RBI's Decision, Says Outlandish to Question Its Credibility

Sitharaman's remarks were triggered by the "unfit government, unfit economy" campaign launched by the Congress on social media. The party, across its Twitter handles, lambasted the Modi government over the ongoing economic slowdown which has reportedly led to job losses in some sectors.

"After looting the RBI, the least this govt can do is inform taxpayers how their money will be used. Unfortunately asking BJP to be transparent is like asking BJP to fix the economy - Impossible. #UnfitGovtUnfitEconomy (sic)," Congress said in the series of posts on Twitter on Thursday.

Responding to the campaign, Sitharaman told the press that the Congress should recall the UPA years, when inflation rose to double digits and corruption plagued the economy.

"They ran an economy with double digit inflation through 10 years that they were in power. They couldn't control prices, they led country in corruption, so to talk about fit and unfit is not for them," she said.

On Tuesday, Sitharaman had similarly called a press conference to defend the Modi government from attacks by the Opposition on the state of economy. ON Rahul Gandhi's charge that RBI's Rs 1.76 lakh crore transfer to the Centre is "loot", she responded by recalling how the Chowkidar Chor Hai campaign of the Gandhi scion had backfired on him in the Lok Sabha elections.

"Whenever Rahul Gandhi raises things like 'chor, chori,' one thing comes to my mind, he tried his best 'chor, chor, chori,' but the public gave him befitting reply. What's the point of using the same words again," she said.
