Nirbhaya's Mother Thanks Supreme Court For Upholding Death For Convicts, Urges Judiciary To Hang Them Soon
Asha Devi, the mother of the 2012 Delhi gang-rape victim, said she is very happy with the judgement but said the struggle doesn't end here as justice is getting delayed.
New Delhi, July 9: The Supreme Court on Monday upheld its earlier order of death sentence and dismissed review pleas filed by three of the four convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case. Asha Devi, the mother of the 2012 Delhi gang-rape victim, said she is very happy with the Supreme Court's judgement today.
She further added saying that the struggle isn't over as justice is getting delayed and requested the judiciary to tighten their judicial system, serve justice to Nirbhaya by hanging them as soon as possible and help other girls and women. "Our struggle does not end here. Justice is getting delayed. It's affecting other daughters of the society", Asha Devi said.
The victim's mother said they were not juveniles and it is unfortunate that they committed such a crime. She said this decision reaffirms the trust in the court and was hopeful that they will definitely get justice.
A three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and comprising Justice Ashok Bhushan and R Bhanumathi, pronounced the Monday's verdict in the case.
According to reports, the judgement on Monday came in response to a review petition filed by three death row convicts- Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma and Pawan Gupta- against the Supreme Court order of May 2017, which said that Nirbhaya's rapists and killers should be hanged.
To recall, the verdict of the Apex Court comes after less than six years of five men and a juvenile raping a 23-year-old girl on a moving bus in Delhi and later dumping her on the road with her male friend. The girl, who succumbed to her injuries after 13 days of the incident, was named Nirbhaya.
