New Delhi, January 17: All four convicts in the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case on Thursday shifted to separate cells inside prison number 3 of Tihar jail. The hanging courtyard is also inside jail number 3. The cells of the convicts have two CCTV cameras. According to a report published in Hindustan Times, jail authorities will file the status report on Friday regarding the legal remedies of the convicts. Until January 16, three convicts Pawan, Akshay and Mukesh were lodged in jail number 2, while the fourth convict Vinay was in jail number 3.

On Thursday, a Delhi court directed the Tihar Jail authorities to file a proper report by January 17 about the status of the scheduled execution of all four convicts. The court passed the directions after jail authorities informed that they have written to the Delhi government on the issue of scheduled execution on January 22 in view of pending remedies. The matter is now listed for Friday at 3:30 pm. Nirbhaya Case: Hanging of Convicts Likely to be Delayed.

As per the Delhi Prison rule 840, the jail authorities are supposed to write to the Delhi government seeking a response whether the date of execution could be postponed. After the court’s order the Delhi government recommended the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to reject the mercy plea of convict Mukesh Singh. The ministry last night sent the plea to the President.

Singh moved mercy petition before President Ram Nath Kovind after his curative plea was rejected by the Supreme Court on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Advocate Rahul Mehra, Standing Counsel for Tihar Jail authorities on Wednesday had said that the execution of the convicts could not take place on January 22 as the decision regarding the date of executing the convicts could only be finalised after the President rejects the mercy plea. On January 7, a Delhi court sentenced the four men to death for gangrape and murder of a medical student in Delhi in 2012.
