New Delhi, January 7: Delhi’s Patiala House Court on Tuesday issued a death warrant to all the four convicts against all the four convicts of the 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape case. All the convicts will be hanged on January 22 at 7 am. They will be executed in prison number-3 at Delhi’s Tihar Jail. However, the Delhi court has given 14 days to the convicts to use their legal remedy. Nirbhaya’s parents expressed happiness over the judgment. Asha Devi Nirbhaya’s mother said, “My daughter has got justice. Execution of the four convicts will empower the women of the country. This decision will strengthen the trust of people in the judicial system.”
Nirbhaya convicts' lawyer AP Singh said that they would file a curative petition in the Supreme Court within a day or two. Meanwhile, cutting across party lines, top politicians including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, MoS Home G Kishan Reddy and BJP Leader Meenakshi Lekhi hailed the verdict. The verdict was pronounced by Additional Sessions and District Court Judge Satish Arora. Delhi’s Tihar Jail officials also wrote to Uttar Pradesh prisons to seek service of a hangman and to inform them about the date and time of execution of the convicts. According to reports, The convicts have been kept in different cells and monitored through CCTV. Special ropes have been reportedly brought from Bihar’s Buxar jail.
The case is related to gangrape of a 23-year-old paramedical student on the night of December 16, 2012. The victim later succumbed to her injuries. Six people were convicted in the case. Out of them, one was minor. Another convict, Ram Singh had committed suicide.
