Nirav Modi and Vijay Mallya’s Cell at Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai to Have French Windows, All-Day Water Supply and Cushioned Cots: Report

According to reports, the amenities in the prison include French windows which reach the ceiling, a toilet and shower with water supply throughout the day.

Mumbai, June 15: The Arthur road jail in Mumbai is all prepared to house fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi and liquor baron Vijay Mallya after their extradition to India. The facilities inside the 300 sq ft jail cell at Mumbai’s Arthur Road prison, where the two are likely to spend their time range from large French windows to cushioned cots. According to a report by Hindustan Times, the amenities in the prison include French windows which reach the ceiling, a toilet and shower with water supply throughout the day. Reports suggest that both will be lodged in Barrack Number 12 of the Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai. The HT report claims that barrack 12 has been recently refurbished and is the first of two similar blocks. The construction of the other two will begin soon.

The cells in these blocks are meant for under-trials only. Meanwhile, several reports claim that if lodged in the barrack, Modi will get three square metre of personal space in accordance to the European norms, a PTI report said. The UK High Court on Wednesday rejected Modi’s bail plea for the fourth time, top jail officials in Mumbai were conducting a final inspection of a fully-equipped cell at Arthur Road jail which he would be staying. Modi has been accused of fraud and money-laundering in the Rs 14,000-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) case. India has been struggling hard  to bring back Modi, who has been in London’s Wandsworth jail since March this year.

According to reports by PTI, authorities in the Arthur Road jail have kept 'barrack no. 12' ready if Modi is extradited from the UK, a Home department official said Tuesday. He was arrested by Scotland Yard officers in London on March 19 and faces extradition to India as the "principal beneficiary" of the fraudulent issuance of letters of undertaking (LoUs) as part of a conspiracy to defraud the Punjab National Bank (PNB) and then laundering the money.

The report informs that prisons department shared information with the state Home department about the status of the Arthur Road prison and facilities that can be provided there, in case Nirav Modi is to be lodged in the barrack.
