Bhubaneshwar, May 24: Niranjan Patnaik, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) President, on Friday, announced his resignation from the post in the wake of the party's poor performance in the state. In 2019 general elections in the state, Congress only won one Lok Sabha seat and nine assembly constituencies. "I too had contested the election, the party had given me a responsibility, I take the moral responsibility for this debacle and relinquish this job. I've communicated it to my AICC President," said Patnaik Naik. Odisha Assembly Elections 2019.

Patnaik also admitted that the Indian National Congress had failed to win people's confidence. "The party needs to take concrete steps to set the organisation in proper shape by getting rid of opportunists and attracting youths into its fold," he said, adding that he tried his best to bolster poll results.

In 2014 general elections, the Congress had won 16 seats in the 147 Odisha assembly. A day before counting, Patnaik had admitted that the grand old party will not post an impressive show in the state.
