New Delhi, March 21: Locals and policemen thrashed a 35-year-old Nigerian national at Dwarka Mor for allegedly manhandling two traffic constables. A video of the incident, which took place on Monday at around 10:45 am, surfaced on Wednesday. After he was assaulted by public and cops, the Nigerian national, identified as Prince, was brought at Mohan Garden police station where a case was registered against him.
According to the Delhi Police, two traffic constables Ajay and Guarav, who were on duty, spotted Prince coming on his scooter without wearing helmet. They asked him to stop and show documents. Instead of complying, tried to forcefully escape, a senior police officer told news agency PTI. An argument broke out between them and soon it turned physical. Prince allegedly manhandled the two officials at the spot. Nigerian Arrested for Drug Peddling, 8 Africans Held for Illegally Staying in India.
Meanwhile, locals had gathered who then thrashed Prince. The entire incident was recorded by a passerby, the video of which has become viral, the officer said. The video, however, did not capture how it all began. In the 91-second video, one traffic policeman is seen holding Prince, while another landed a punch on him. Locals soon joined the assault.
The incident comes four months after an incident on November 22 when a mob assaulted around six persons from Africa on suspicion of killing and eating a boy who was later found alive. In 2017, four Nigerian students were attacked in Greater Noida, 40 km away from New Delhi, following protests over the death of a class 12 student of a residential colony there due to a drug overdose.
Some people who were holding a candle-light vigil for the student attacked the Nigerians, suspecting them of drug-running. African envoys termed the attack "xenophobic and racial in nature", the remarks rejected by India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.
