Bhopal, August 27: In a shocking incident that highlights the audacity of street harassment, a schoolgirl in Bhopal was subjected to a disturbing assault on a bustling street after she rebuffed a stranger's advances. The distressing episode took place on a Friday evening, August 25, leaving the victim traumatised and raising concerns about the safety of individuals, particularly women and girls, in public spaces.
According to the Times of India report, the young girl, a 16-year-old studying in class 10, had been commuting to a coaching centre in Jawahar Chowk, TT Nagar, using an e-rickshaw. The aggressor, an unidentified man who had been stalking her for around 5-6 days, escalated his harassment by stopping his bike in front of her and persistently demanding her attention. Despite her consistent refusal and attempts to ignore him, the situation took a horrifying turn when he resorted to violence to assert his control. The incident occurred in broad daylight, with numerous people present on the street, yet no one intervened to help the distressed girl. The assailant sunk his teeth into her right cheek groped her, and chillingly informed his friends that this act was a form of "revenge" for her rejection. He further threatened the victim stating, "This time I have left my mark on your face. The next time I will ruin your face". The survivor managed to fend off further attacks and reached the safety of her home, where she tearfully recounted the traumatic experience to her parents. In response, they promptly filed a complaint with TT Nagar police, registering a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
