Mumbai, January 1: Taking strict action against traffic rule violators on the New Year's eve 2019, the Mumbai Police had imposed barricades in all parts of the city. On highways and road connecting the arterial parts of the city, dozens of constables were deployed to apprehend maximum among the miscreants. The campaign led to the issuance of 455 challans for 'drink and driving', and 1,114 for 'overspeeding'.
Police personnel while speaking to reporters said they would be adopting a zero-tolerance policy as the road rule violators not only keep their own lives on the brisk, but also put to risk the safety of pedestrians and those riding in accordance with the law. Apart from keeping a check on road rule violators, policemen and female constables were deployed in large numbers to prevent incidents of sexual harassment, molestation and loot.
Over 40,000 police personnel were on "bandobast" ensure safety of New Year revellers in Mumbai on the night of December 31, a senior official said. Special squads to curb harassment of women will be were deployed at many places, he added.
The police was assisted by the State Reserve Police Force and Home Guard while the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) was also kept on alert.
Crowded places were being checked by the Anti-Sabotage Squad and BDDS ahead of New Year's eve while marine patrolling was stepped along the coast, the DCP added.
