New Year Eve Drink and Driving Cases: Delhi Police Issues 509 Challans
Over 15,000 police personnel were deployed across the national capital to ensure celebrations go off smoothly on the New Year's Eve. Reports inform that special traffic arrangements were made to regulate the movement of revellers.
New Delhi, January 1: The Delhi Police issued nearly 509 challans for a drink and drive cases on the New Year's Eve on 31st December 2018. The Delhi traffic police were out in full force to ensure drunk driving offenders are punished. Over 15,000 police personnel were deployed across the national capital to ensure celebrations go off smoothly on the New Year's Eve. According to a PTI report, heavy security was in place at Connaught Place and the areas around it. All vehicular movement was restricted from 8 pm onwards to the posh commercial hub till the celebrations conclude. Meanwhile, the exit facility at the Rajiv Chowk metro station was not available for commuters from 9 pm onwards in the view of security measures.
Reports inform that women police personnel were also deployed in plain clothes at various strategic locations across the city to maintain law and order across the city. Scores of police personnel were also deployed at crowded places like malls, markets and metro stations.
On New Year's eve, pollution levels spiked to 'severe' category in the national capital prompting authorities to warn people that any increase in vehicular pollutants or burning of firecrackers would worsen the situation. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data on Monday showed that the city recorded an overall air quality index (AQI) of 417, while the Centre-run System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting (SAFAR) recorded an AQI of 418, both come under the 'severe' category.
