Ranchi, October 10: A bizarre case of fraud has made headlines in Jharkhand's Giridih district. On Monday, October 9, nine people were detained after a fake call center involved in defrauding pregnant women was discovered. The police confirmed that the call center was based in a recently built house near the Panchamba police station.
According to Superintendent of Police Deepak Kumar Sharma, the accused used to target pregnant women under the pretence of providing them with government welfare packages and would syphon money from their bank accounts. In addition to defrauding pregnant women, the fraudsters also targeted electricity consumers, duping them into paying their bills. Sharma stated that a team led by DSP (Cyber) Sandeep Suman conducted a raid at the residence, resulting in the arrest of seven people. Two additional people were apprehended based on information acquired during the interrogation of those detained. Among the things seized were 16 mobile phones, 25 SIM cards, four ATM cards, six passbooks, two chequebooks, three QR codes, and two motorbikes. Previously, Angul police nabbed a cyber fraudster from Jharkhand's Jamtara region on allegations of duping Bandhan Bank's branch manager out of lakhs of rupees. Angul police are transporting the fraudster to Odisha after apprehending him with the assistance of the Jamtara Crime Branch. Notably, the fraudster defrauded the branch manager of thousands of rupees by posing himself as a representative of a mobile phone service provider.
