New Delhi, April 8: Food served in trains has always been a concern for passengers travelling in Indian Railways. On Sunday morning, at least 36 passengers travelling in the New Delhi-Bhubaneswar Rajdhani Express (22812) were taken ill allegedly from food poisoning after consuming dinner served by IRCTC. Reports inform that passengers complained of uneasiness, loose motion and vomiting while they were on their way towards Bokaro station at 4 am. According to a report by Hindustan Times, the first complaints came when the train crossed Gaya station before daybreak. A medical team was soon rushed to treat the passengers. Passengers said that after consuming the dinner supplied by the railways, they went to sleep and woke up to uneasiness. The HT report quotes Adra rail division manager (DRM) SK Srivastava saying that at least 36 passengers of four coaches (B1, B3, B5, and B8) were treated for food poisoning during the journey. Srivastava added saying that the condition of the patients was stable and they are out of danger. Since the affected passengers recovered with the treatment of railway doctors, they didn’t want to be admitted at the hospitals in Bokaro. Bokaro railway station manager LGK Singh said that a medical team boarded the coaches as the train reached Bokaro station at 8.50am. All the passengers were dehydrated by that time.
As Rajdhani Express had only a two-minute halt at Bokaro station, the station manager offered to take passengers to the hospital, but no passenger agreed. One of the doctors treating the patients said they had initially received information saying 17 were affected but later passengers from other coaches also began to complain of diarrhoea symptoms. The DRM said that it looked like a case of food poisoning and further probe into the incident is currently underway.
