New Delhi, December 7: The government in its recent notification has stated that all cars that will be sold from April 2019 will have to compulsorily carry fuel stickers to indicate the type of fuel they operate on. According to reports, along with colour-coded stickers, the cars will also have to carry high-security registration plates (HSRP) which is now mandatory for manufacturers to fix in the car at the point of sale. According to a report by Hindustan Times, car buyers will not have to pay extra as the cost of the plates will be included in the vehicle’s price. The government order further states that the manufacturers will have to replace them free of cost in case they get damaged within five years of sale. Reports inform that it was formalised by the HSRP Order, 2018 which laid down the guidelines for the number-plate rule. The transport ministry further said that stickers on windscreens will be light blue colour for petrol and CNG vehicles and orange for diesel. It must be noted that diesel vehicles cause higher emissions while CNG cars are considered the least polluting. Climate Change, Air Pollution Causing Millions of Premature Deaths, Says Study.
The HT report quoted Vishnu Mathur, director general of Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers saying they are not expecting that HSRP order will be put into practice quickly. However, the pressure from stakeholders and the court is likely to be added to the implementation of the new order. “A lot of people were having problems with getting these plates and the industry has agreed to support it,” he was quoted in the report.
